Born in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, Karun Nair is a promising young top-order batsman, who has the ability to play long innings. Though born in Rajasthan, he represented Karnataka in the domestic circuit and had a great debut season in 2013-14. Though he did not play all the matches, he played six matches and scored close to 500 runs including three hundreds with a highest of 151 not out.
His strike-rate in the limited-overs format was pretty good and soon he caught the eyes of Rahul Dravid, who was instrumental in roping him into the Rajasthan Royals squad at the auctions for the 2014 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Before joining Rajasthan Royals, he was part of Royal Challengers Bangalore, but wasn't given many opportunities.
He wasn't tested at the start of the season and when he got the opportunity to open the innings, he failed in the first few games. However, Dravid trusted the youngster and persisted with him and it paid rich dividends as Nair played a match-winning 73 not out against Delhi Daredevils. He was a regular opener since then and eventually went on to become the side's second leading run-scorer despite having missed the first few games.
After Rajasthan Royals were handed a two-year ban, Nair was picked by Delhi Daredevils in the 2016 IPL auctions. Once again Dravid - the Delhi Daredevils head coach now, showing his faith in the youngster and Nair didn't disappoint. Even though the franchise failed to make it to the playoffs, Nair was the second highest run-getter for his side, behind Quinton de Kock.
Being one of the bright spots in the IPL 2016, Nair was selected for the ODI and T20I tour of Zimbabwe. He made his debut in the first ODI where he opened with fellow state mate, KL Rahul. However, he didn't make an impact in the two outings and also failed to capitalize when selected for the India A side.
The Test call had come earlier as the talented batsman was called up to join the India squad for the Test series against Sri Lanka in 2015. He didn't get a game, but the time spent with the national side was to serve him well. The long awaited Test debut came against England in Visakhapatnam, November, 2016. He was unlucky to be run-out by his captain, Virat Kohli and then fell for another cheap score in the next Test in Mumbai.
Luck favoured Karun as Ajinkya Rahane's injury let him have another shot, in Chennai. Little did anyone realize that Chepauk would prove to be his tryst with destiny. Batting at number 5, Karun became only the second Indian batsman to score a triple hundred. Heaps of records fell on the wayside as the 25-year old Karnataka batsman showed his penchant for big runs, which had been already showcased during his match-winning 328, against Tamil Nadu in the 2014 Ranji Trophy final.
Karun had come to stay and should form part of a formidable Indian middle-order for seasons to come.
